The world and European champions raced into a two-goal lead after just 32 minutes as they monopolized possession in the opening minutes, however, they couldn't extend their lead in the second half although they played some impressive football.

Luis Suarez scored an incredible free-kick two minutes from full-time, but it was too little too late for La celeste.

Italy won with the same result over Mexico in a much more competitive game.
Andrea Pirlo, who was celebrating his 100th Azzurri appearance scored a stunning free-kick after 27 minutes, but Manchester United striker Chicharito scored the equaliser from the penalty spot seven minutes later.

Mario Balotelli saved the day for Italy 12 minutes from full-time with a brilliant finish to outmuscle Rodriguez from deep inside the area.

Results:

Group A
Mexico 1-2 Italy (Hernandez 34 |  Pirlo 27’, Balotelli 78’)
Group B
Spain 2-1 Uruguay (Pedro 20’, Soldado 32 |  Suarez ‘88’)
