World number one Serena Williams won her first French Open title since 2002 and her 16th grand slam when she beat defending champion Maria Sharapova in straight sets after one hour and 46 minutes .
The Russian second seed had not beaten her American opponent since 2004 and she couldn't do better today as the world Number one extended her career-best winning streak to 31 matches.
