Hours after the Spanish tax authorities had accused Leo Messi and his father Jorge of defrauding the government for more than €4 million in between 2007 and 2009, the Argentinian captain released the following statement on his Facebook page in response to the allegations
"We have just known through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities. We are surprised about those news, because we have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advices of our Tax Consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation."
Leo's father told AS that he as well was surprised with the accusations:
"This is all a mistake, you need to speak to the tax and legal specialists, and they will make everything clear. I have already spoken to our lawyers and told them to sort it out, but I don't understand anything about what has happened. I don't deal with these matters, I am a resident of Argentina."
"I haven't spoken with my son, I don't have to, because it is all a mistake. Why would I want to worry him?", he added.
